I need a cheap laptop that can surf the net and play games like COD MW2. Will a netbook with a (external?) CDROM drive work? Are the graphics good enough? I’m limited on $$$.
There are a few laptops under $500 that will be ideal for you. What I’ll suggest is
that you also get an external hard drive and store most of your stuff outside the laptops
hard drive and you’ll be fine.

Acer, Asus, HP
Good luck

To play COD MW2, that will automatically push your laptop price to at least $600, since it will need a decent graphics card (not integrated).
The cheapest I would suggest is around $700, with a custom setup through Asus/Dell/HP, etc. Just make sure you get at least a Geforce 9600M as your graphics card.
I currently have an older 8600M GT, and can only run COD MW2 on 1024×768 medium settings.

No way, a netbook definitely won’t suffice because they have smaller batteries that are designed to work under less strain. Also a graphics card on a netbook is guaranteed to be…CR*P
In order to play COD MW2 on a laptop your going to have to be looking at top of the line laptops costing $1600+ HP’s new Envy series will be able to run it for sure.
If i were you stick to a desktop, you get more bang for your buck. Get a cheap one with a dual core processor rated at atleast 3.0 GHZ, 3GB RAM and an HD Raden 48xx series card, or the nvidia equivalent
I know it sucks that your going to have to pay so much, but thats life
