Best affordable specs to look for when buying a new pc!

4. Operating system:- windows vista premium (recommended) or windows vista basic (if cheaper for u)
5. Video:- ati radeon xpress 256mb hypermemory (amd pcs) and intel graphics media accelerator (intel pcs), (if you have the xtra money get a (128MB dedicated video card) instead of a onboard video card, really doesn't matter)
6. Optical drive:- dvd/rw-(plays cds, dvds and burns cds, dvds), cd/rw dvd combo -(plays cds, burns cds and only

I need a laptop for word processing, to run simple games (like solitaire or backgammon), to make music playlists, and to do simple wireless internet surfing.
I want a small computer, but one with a keyboard that's large enough for touch typing.
I want it to be cheap, and would consider an out-of-date model.
Any thoughts on what I should look for or how much I need to spend?
Thank you.
For cheap laptlaptops, you have a few options:
1. 15-inch laptop - best value, but a bit bulky. Start around $500, and should be more than adequate.
2. 14-inch laptop - slightly lighter, but still can get decent speed starting around $600
3. Netbooks - ranging from 7.1 to 12.1 inches, they're cheap and tiny, but have limitations. They don't have CD drives, and the keyboards are usually 80-90% of the normal size. Prices range from $300-$600, but don't expect Windows Vista.
What is the maximum amount I could get for a used £20 pack or £10 pack?

been thinking of renewing present pc with an Apple 20" pc ,can anyone recommend any particular model and where can I purchase a good refurbished or good as new one?
many thanks for your help in advance.
You can save a couple of hundred pounds by shopping online at Apple's UK store (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore ).
Check out the Special Deals (on the bottom right hand side of the main store page) for special offers and to buy certified refurbished items.
If you're a student, it would be interesting to see their special store section for savings not available to general users (http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukInd )
Best of luck finding that perfect MBP
Some laptops say refurbished and some say reconditioned. Is reconditioned crappy or the same? I have bought refurbished things before which were just like new - is reconditioned the same or will it look all used and old or such?
What an excellent question.
According to an item on Ebay, reconditioned is more to do with replacing worn out parts and refurbishing is more about repairing things that have failed.
However, in the real world I think it is highly unlikely that there will be much difference between the two.

I'm trying to get a phone with a metro Pcs carrier but somehow metro pcs isn't listed as a carrier.
no, you're kinda stuck with Metro…they have use CDMA and GSM technology….the only one where you can switch its T-Mobile and ATT/Cingular!
What sort of cable to i need to transfer data between 2 desktops?
Like is it called a network cable? Or an ethereal net cable or something?
Thanks
an ethernet cable is only half right. you need a crossover ethernet cable. the normal ethernet cable (such as a patch, or straight through) is meant to go from your computer to a router or hub, not to another computer. a crossover cable is meant to go from your computer to comptuer, or router to router. a straight through cable if your computer has an auto-mdx feature, which some of the new computers have, auto-mdx basically detects what the computer is connected to, and pretends the cable is a straight thru or crossover as it sees fit.
oh the suggestion about the usb cable will also work, ive never used those but i've heard they work too.
I am trying to cover my the composition notebooks that my class decorated, but I am so frustrated with this peel and stick laminate! Help!
I don’t know how you’re trying to go about it, but I’ve found that the easiest way is to cut the paper to size then peel the paper off the back a bit at a time as you cover the notebook. Getting the paper straight relative to the notebook before you start is key, that will set the whole thing up for success. After you’ve got it started, sort of roll the notebook on the table and the contact paper will wrap around it. Then it’s just a matter of keeping it pulled tightly so it doesn’t bubble up.
I'm having some trouble with audio on my HP Pavilion zv5255us laptop.
The sound card/audio does work so I know it's not a problem with the drivers, but I can only get sound when I apply pressure to the laptop, usually near the headphone jack. This happens when trying to listen through the speakers and through headphones. I've recently bought a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Amigo to help the situation and it does work perfectly with headphones but I don't think there's a way to have it work through my laptop speakers. As I travel a lot I don't want to have to buy external speakers to listen to audio without headphones but I am willing to do this if necessary. I should also note that I will by buying a new laptop in about a year so I don't want to make any costly repairs/upgrades on this laptop.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
This is most likely due to a bad connection somewhere within the laptop, probably near the sound car or speakers. Your only real option it to pull the laptop apart, and look for lose connections somewhere. It could be a bad pin, lose wire, or a solder that came loose somewhere.
The definite fix for this would be to replace the motherboard. I had a video problem once on a desktop that was very similar, only worked with pressure on the port, I opened up the PC, jiggled some wires and connections, and then it was fine.

I need to use a hard drive with windows XP on from an old laptop in a newer laptop. The newer laptop does not recognize the hard drive from the old laptop. How can I get the laptop to recognize the old laptops hard drive?
The hard drive from the newer laptop does not work properly so I want to use the hard drive from an old laptop that already has windows XP installed on it (drivers will not be a problem).
The hard drive does work and should work in the old laptop.
Connect the cables from the laptop to the old hard drive. If you did that, or the cables doesn't fit, you're out of luck, as far as I know.
